Blueberry Picking | Things To Do in Pensacola with Kids
Summer…It’s a season I have a love/hate relationship with.
If I’m being honest, it’s mostly hate. The heat and humidity here in Florida make me utterly miserable and I can practically feel the sun burning my fair, freckled skin.
In the wake of COVID-19, this has hands down been the worst summer ever. The day camps I had lined up for the kids were canceled and the options for getting the kids out of the house are slim (and they all involve being outside…in the heat…in the humidity).
The one activity we’ve actually been enjoying is blueberry picking. I especially love the fields that are open from early in the morning or late in the evening so we can go when the sun is low. It feels safe to let the kids run around and they really enjoy hunting for ripe berries. At roughly $1/lb this is a pretty economical activity too. After about an hour of picking, we only had 1.5 lbs, which is actually a TON of berries. Far more than you get from the grocery store at twice the cost.
My advice would be to dress your kids in simple summery outfits and let them do the picking while you document it. Don’t forget to look for and capture all of the little details: berries on the vine and in the basket, little hands picking, little mouths eating…you can never have enough.
Have you been berry picking this summer? Which farms are your favorite?
